Native to Russia, Manchuria, and Siberia, these thorny, spiny plants have ferny foliage and spring flowers shaped like bright yellow sweet peas. They are most useful where choice is limited by cold, heat, wind, and intense sunlight, making nearlyindestructible mountain anddesert windbreaks. Occasionally prune out old wood on the larger species to rejuvenate them; these can also be clipped as hedges.
