Caragana arborescens

Siberian Peashrub

Deciduous, Shrubs, Flowers

CARAGANA

Native to Russia, Manchuria, and Siberia, these thorny, spiny plants have ferny foliage and spring flowers shaped like bright yellow sweet peas. They are most useful where choice is limited by cold, heat, wind, and intense sunlight, making nearly indestructible mountain and desert windbreaks. Occasionally prune out old wood on the larger species to rejuvenate them; these can also be clipped as hedges.

Caragana arborescens

Fast growing to 20 ft. tall and 15 ft. across; ‘Pendula’ is a weeping variety; ‘Walkeri’ is a weeping dwarf to 6–8 ft. (may need staking). Leaves to 3 in. long, each with four to six pairs of leaflets.
