Cephalanthus occidentalis

Buttonbush, Button Willow
Rubiaceae
Deciduous, Shrubs, Trees

This rounded shrub grows 3–15 ft. tall and wide. Its brightgreen, paired or whorled leavescome out late in spring. Creamy white, slender-tubed flowers crowd into rounded, 1–1 1/2-in.-wide heads in late summer; projecting stigmas give these heads a look one nurseryman described as “golf balls with antennae.” Useful for naturalizing in wet areas. C. o. californicusis very similar.
