Corynocarpus laevigatus

New Zealand Laurel

Evergreen, Shrubs, Trees, Decorative fruit or berries

Best in zones 17, 24; H1, H2. A handsome, upright tree or shrub reaching 20–40 ft. high by 5–15 ft. wide. Its beautiful, dark green, very glossy, leathery leaves grow to 7 in. long by 2 in. wide. (Leaves of ‘Variegatus’ have a showy yellow border.) Flowers are noticeable but of no importance—tiny, whitish, in 3–8-in.-long upright clusters. Orange, oblong fruit to 1 in. long follows the blooms. Good in containers. Slow growing, keeping its attractive form for years. Needs only minimal pruning. Use as a screen or large hedge, background. Good in sheltered areas, entryways, beneath overhangs. Has naturalized in Hawaii.
