Best in zones 17, 24; H1, H2. A handsome, upright tree or shrub reaching 20–40 ft. high by 5–15 ft. wide. Its beautiful, dark green, very glossy, leathery leaves grow to 7 in. long by 2 in. wide. (Leaves of ‘Variegatus’ have a showy yellow border.) Flowers are noticeable but of no importance—tiny, whitish, in 3–8-in.-long upright clusters. Orange, oblong fruit to 1 in. long follows the blooms. Good in containers. slow growing, keeping its attractive form for years. Needs only minimal pruning. Use as screen or large hedge, background. Good in sheltered areas, entryways, beneath overhangs. Has naturalized in Hawaii.
