Edgeworthia chrysantha

Paper Bush
Thymelaeaceae
Deciduous, Shrubs

A daphne relative from China grown in Asia for its bark, which is used in the manufacture of fancy paper. Grows to 6 ft. tall and wide, with pliable stems produced freely from the base and 4-in. leaves that cluster toward the branch tips. In winter or earliest spring, many small, fragrant pale yellow flowers in tight clusters to 2 in. across open from interesting-looking silky whitish buds formed the previous fall. ‘Akebono’ has orange-red flowers. Protect blossoms from late-spring frosts. Little pruning is required.
