ESCHSCHOLZIA

Poppy relatives with upward-facing, four-petaled yellow or orange blooms above finely cut foliage. Individual plants grow about 1 1/2 ft.wide. Of the several species native to western North America and Mexico, E. californica is the most outstanding and the most widely used. All are drought tolerant, but giving them summer water will extend their flowering season.

Eschscholzia caespitosa

Native to California and southwestern Oregon. Grows about 6 in. high and wide, with threadlike leaves and bright yellow flowers. Use for edging, in containers. ‘Sundew’ has densely tufted growth and lemon yellow flowers to 1 in. across.
