These slender, upright growers, usually multitrunked, offer handsome, generally evergreen leaves and pure white flowers with tufts of yellow stamens in the center. Good accent plants. Give them neutral or slightly acid soil and shelter from strong winds. In Zones 5 and 6,protect young plants from temperatures below 15°F (–9°C).

Among the best are ‘Mount Usher’, which grows about 20 ft. tall and 8 ft. wide, with (often double) flowers to 2 in. across; and ‘Nymansay’, to 15 ft. tall and 10 ft. wide, which is somewhat faster growing and produces honey-scented flowers to 2 1/2 in. wide. Both bloom in late summer.
