Farfugium japonicum
Perennials
From China, Japan. Big-leafed, water-loving plant forms a clump about 2 ft. high and wide. Glossy bright green, kidney-shaped, scalloped, or shallowly lobed leaves up to 15 in. wide are carried on long (1–2 ft.) leafstalks. Flower stems to 2 ft. tall carry several 1 1/2–2 1/2-in. yellow daisy flowers. The species is not as popular or widely grown as its selections.
‘Argenteum’ has somewhat smaller deep green leaves marbled with gray-green and white. ‘Aureomaculatum’, also known as leopard plant, has thick, leathery leaves that are heavily, evenly speckled with yellow. ‘Crispatum’, sometimes called pie crust ligularia, has thick, ruffle-edged gray-green leaves.
All are choice container plants for shady beds, entryways; good groundcover in constantly moist but well-drained soil. Tops hardy to 20°F (–7°C). Plants die back to roots at 0°F (–18°C), put on new growth in spring. Control snails and slugs.
