Hedychium
Ginger Lily
Zingiberaceae
Perennials, Flowers
Native to tropical Asia, India, and the Himalayas. Grown for their dramatic leaves and fragrant, colorful blooms. Foliage is especially handsome in tropical conditions, as in Hawaii.Dense spikes of richly perfumed flowers are produced in late summer or early autumn. Plants spread indefinitely by rhizomes. Frost can kill them to ground, but new stalks appear in earlyspring. Useful in large containers but will not grow as tall there as in open ground. Ginger lily does best in rich soil high in organic matter. To encourage fresh new growth, remove old stems after flowers fade.

Plant grows to 8 ft.tall, with narrow leaves to 1 1/2 ft. long. Pure yellow flowers with red stamens are borne in 1 1/2-ft.-long spikes. Naturalized in Hawaii and considered a pest on most of the Islands.
