With trumpet-shaped flowers that seem large for the size of the plant, these trumpet-vine relatives are from the Himalayas and western China. Plants are deep rooted and need reasonably deep soil and excellent drainage (they can take a certain amount of cold, but not cold, soggy soil). Protect from slugs and snails.
Grows 2 ft. high, 1 ft. wide. Grows from a carrot-shaped perennial root and forms a rosette of foot-long leaves, each divided into many leaflets. The foot-long flower stalk is topped by 2–12 blossoms that are 3 in. long and wide, rosy purple outside, yellow and purple within. Blooms in late spring, early summer. ‘Snowtop’ has white flowers. In cold-winter regions, mulch plants after ground has frozen (to prevent ground from heaving).
