These woody-stemmed Southern California natives with tubular, lipped flowers were once listed as shrubby penstemons. Extremely drought-tolerant, they drop their leaves in summer unless watered. Need excellentdrainage.

To about 5 ft. tall andwide, sprawling. Behaves almost like a vine when growing among taller shrubs. Dark green leaves. Red, 1–2-in.-long, unscented flowers appear from late springinto early summer. A yellow-flowered variety is available.Full sun or partial shade.
