Leontopodium alpinum

Edelweiss

Perennials, Flowers

Much loved and legally protected in many Eurasian countries, this small, short-lived alpine perennial is native to the mountains of Europe. Gros to 1 ft. high and wide, it has woolly white stems, leaves, and bracts. Small white flower heads are crowded at the stem tips; a collar of slender leaves radiates out from below each flower head—more like the arms of a starfish than like a member of the sunflower family. Tiny bracts of flower heads are tipped with black. Blooms in early summer. Needs excellent drainage.
