Much loved and legally protected in many Eurasian countries, this small, short-livedalpine perennial is native to themountains of Europe. To 1 ft.high and wide, it has woollywhite stems, leaves, and bracts. Small white flowerheads are crowded at stemtips; a collar of slender leavesradiates out from below eachflower head—more like the arms of a starfish than like a member of the sunflower family. Tiny bracts of flower heads are tipped with black. Blooms in early summer. Needs excellent drainage.
