Lepechinia calycina

Pitcher Sage

Evergreen, Shrubs, Flowers

LEPECHINIA

Like some sages, these reach 6 ft. tall and nearly as wide, with a rustic native look; once established, they can do without irrigation except in the hottest regions. All have opposite pairs of leaves and short, spike-like clusters of tubular, 1 1/4-in. flowers with a gaping mouth and prominent calyx. Except as noted, the species listed here are from California’s Coast Ranges and bear white to pale pink or lavender blooms. Pitcher sage is almost never browsed by deer.

Lepechinia calycina

Lance-shaped to narrowly egg-shaped leaves. Blooms in late spring. ‘Rocky Point’ grows 2 ft. high, spreading, with lavender flowers in spring.
