Related to locust (Robinia) andyellow wood (Cladrastis kentukea),these are small tomedium-size trees with leavesdivided like feathers into manysmall, narrow leaflets. Theygrow at a slow to moderaterate. Summer flowers resemblesmall sweet peas; creamy toyellowish white, crowded intoerect, 4–6-in.-long, spikelikeclusters. Flat, 2–3-in.-long seed-podsfollow the blossoms.Plants are not fussy about soil.Need minimal pruning.

Chinese nativereaches 20–30 ft. high andwide. Shrubbier than M. amurensis, with leaves divided into more and smaller leaflets. Foliage unfolds silvery grayish green, matures to dark green.
