MUHLENBERGIA

Narrow-leafed grasses that are large enough and showy enough to stand out in the garden. Except as noted, they are evergreen in mild winters but turn tan or brown with hard freezes. They are very drought-tolerant plants but look better and grow larger if given some supplemental water.

Muhlenbergia dubia

Native to Arizona, western Texas, New Mexico, and northern Mexico. Densely tufted plant, similar to M. rigens but smaller (2–3 ft. high and wide). Fine-textured leaves and upright, creamy flower spikes in summer and fall. Plant in well-drained soil.
