This slow-growing, drought-tolerant evergreen shrub grows to 6 ft. tall and 4 ft. wide, with small, lobed, resinous leaves and fragrant spring flowers that look like miniature single roses. Masses of showy (but individually tiny) straw-colored, feathery fruits follow. Rugged branches have peeling bark. Native to Mexico and Arizona. P. m. stansburiana, native in the Great Basin, California, and Arizona, grows to 4 ft. tall, with silvery leaves and creamy yellow flowers. Tolerates clay soil.
