Ravenala madagascariensis

Traveler’s Tree, Traveler’s Palm
Strelitziaceae
Evergreen, Trees

This spectacular Madagascar native grows to 30–40 ft. tall and 25–30 ft. wide, with large, banana-like leaves held in the shape of a gigantic fan atop an unbranched trunk. Protect from strong winds, which will shred the leaves. Small plants have some shade tolerance; can be used as potted specimens. Jungle travelers can find rainwater in Ravenala’s flower bracts and leaf sheaths—thus the common name.
