From western tropical Africa.Grown outdoors in mildest-winterclimates; houseplant anywhere.Appreciated for thick,rigidly upright, patterned leavesthat grow from thick rhizomesto form 2-ft.-wide rosettes.Leaves are dark green bandedwith gray-green, grow 4 ft. tall,2 in. wide. Bears erect, narrowclusters of fragrant greenishwhite flowers in Hawaii but seldomon mainland. S. t. laurentiiis identical to the species buthas broad, creamy yellowstripes on leaf edges. Dwarf‘Hahnii’ has rosettes of 6-in.-long, broadly triangular, darkgreen leaves with silvery banding;rosettes pile up to make amass 1 ft. tall and wide. Othervarieties and species are collectors’ items; scores can befound in catalogs of succulentplants.

First common name comesfrom use of tough leaf fibers asbowstrings; second comes fromleaf banding or mottling, whichresembles some snakeskins;third probably comes from toughnessof plants and pointed leaftips. Outdoors, plants toleratemany soil types, take salt airand drought; indoors, grow inmuch or little light, seldom needrepotting. Withstand dry air,fluctuating temperatures, andscanty, capricious watering.
