Schlumbergera

Cactaceae
Cacti and succulents, Flowers

Famous for profuse bloom that roughly coincides with winter holidays, these cactus live on trees in the wild. In cultivation, they need rich, porous soil—a mix of equal parts coarse sand, peat moss, and leaf mold does nicely. Feed with liquid fertilizer every 7 to 10 days during growth and bloom. The many available kinds differ principally in flower color. Leaf segments root easily, making it easy to share plants.
