Trachelium caeruleum

Perennials, Flowers

Tough, undemanding Mediterranean native to 2 1/2 ft. tall and wide. Forms a clump of stems clothed with narrow, sharply toothed, dark green leaves. Blooms over a long summer season, when sparsely foliaged flowering stems are topped by broad, dome-shaped clusters of tiny blossoms in blue, mauve, pink, or white. Good cut flowers. If sown early, will bloom the first year (and so can be treated as a summer annual in colder climates or as a winter annual in mild-winter desert).
