Trifolium repens

White Clover, White Dutch Clover

Perennials, Flowers

Sometimes mixed with lawn grass or dichondra seed. Prostrate stems root freely, send up a lush cover of leaves with three leaflets. Can stain clothing; white flowers attract bees. These colored-leaf varieties grow 4 in. high and spread indefinitely, and are used as groundcovers or at the front of borders: ‘Atropurpureum’ (also sold as ‘Dark Dancer’) features blackish purple leaves edged in green; ‘Green Ice’, lime green with a dark green margin; ‘Purpurascens’, maroon outlined in green. T. r. minus is one of the shamrocks. All take nitrogen from air and fix it in soil through action of bacteria on their roots.
