TRILLIUM

Blooms in early spring; needs some winter chill. Each stem is topped with a whorl of three leaves; a single three-petaled flower appears in the center of the whorl (sometimes on a stalk, sometimes virtually stalkless). Plant in shady, woodsy site. Left undisturbed, plants will gradually increase by rhizomes. Dies to ground in mid- to late summer.

Trillium chloropetalum

Native to California.To 1–1 1/2 ft. high and 1 ft.wide, with 6-in.-long leaves mottledin maroon. Stalkless flowershave greenish white toyellowish petals about 2 1/2 in.long. T. c. giganteum has deepmaroon petals.
