These Eurasian natives are sturdy, clumping grasses with feathery flower plumes that fade from purple-tinted green to yellow, then buff. Deciduous. This grass forms an upright, arching clump 1 1/2–2 1/2 ft. tall and 2 ft. wide. In late summer or early fall, broad flower spikes bring plant height to 4 ft. This is one of the best grasses for partial shade. Great in containers.
