Calodendrum capense
Cape Chestnut
Rutaceae
Deciduous, Shrubs
Native to South Africa. Slow growing to 25–40 ft. tall and wide, with light to medium green, oval leaves to 6 in. long. Seldom flowers before the age of about 5 years, but the show is noteworthy when it does come: profuse spikes of rosy lilac, 1 1/2-in.-long flowers. Whole flower cluster measures 10–12 in. high by as much across, and extends well above foliage, giving effect of candelabra. Generally blooms from late spring into summer, but time of flowering and deciduous period varies, depending on where tree is planted. Locate out of prevailing wind. Light, sandy soils are not to its liking.
