Native to Mexico. Slender, columnar cactus growing slowly to 45 ft. tall in great old age; usually much smaller. Covered with long, grayish white hairs and 1 1/2-in. yellow spines. Only old, quite large (over 15-ft.-tall) plants bloom; they flower in spring, bearing 2-in.-long, rose-colored flowers that open at night.
Grow in rocky or loose soil. Supplemental water, fertilizer will speed growth of garden plants. Protect from hard frosts. In Zone 13, provide some shade. Indoors, give southern exposure.
