South African native forms a clump 3–5 in. high, slowly spreading to 15–18 in. wide. Spiky green to bronzy red leaves point up. Bright red, 2-in. flowers in winter or early spring, sporadic bloom in other seasons. Blooms attract bees. Grow in well-drained soil. Plant 6–12 in. apart for groundcover. Provide supplemental irrigation during active growth and bloom; cut back watering in summer. In the desert, needs afternoon shade.
