Chasmanthium latifolium

Sea Oats, Bamboo Grass
Poaceae (Gramineae)
Ornamental grasses and grasslike plants, Perennials

Clumps of broad, bamboolike leaves support 2–5-ft. flowering stems in summer; they carry showers of silvery green spikelets that resemble flattened clusters of oats (or flattened armadillos). These turn copper in fall and look good through winter, drying to a greenish straw color that works well in dried arrangements. Cut them down before spring growth begins. Clumps widen slowly to 2 ft. and are not aggressive. Divide them every third spring. Stake if flowering stems sprawl. From eastern American woodlands.
