Originally hybrids between oranges and pummelos, grapefruit trees can reach to 25–30 ft. tall (most are shorter), with large, dark green leaves. True grapefruit needs heat for sweet-tart fruit; it’s best in Florida, south Texas, and the desert, where fruit ripens in 9 months (can take a year or longer where there’s less heat).
