Coix lacryma-jobi

Job’s Tears
Poaceae (Gramineae)
Annuals, Ornamental grasses and grasslike plants

From Southeast Asia. Grown for its ornamental beadlike seeds. Leaves are 1 1/2 in. wide, to 2 ft. long, growing in loose, sprawling clumps to 1 1/2 ft. across. Smooth, prominently jointed stems to 6 ft. long bear separate male and female flower spikelets in autumn. Outside coverings of female flowers harden as seeds ripen, turning to shiny, 1/4–1/2 -in. “beads” in pearly white, gray, or violet; these can be strung like actual beads. For use in dried arrangements, cut stems before seeds dry and shatter.
