Native from Alberta to north Texas, west to Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and deserts of California. Has single or clustered globular, 2-in. bodies covered with little knobs bearing white spines. Showy pink to purple flowers to 2 in. long. Wide spreading. One of the hardiest cacti; subspecies from the coldest zones will take temperatures far below zero. Also thrives as a houseplant; cut back on moisture during winter. Usually sold as Mammillaria vivipara.
