CUPRESSUS

These conifers have tiny scalelike leaves that are closely set on cord-like branches and bear interesting globular, golf ball–size cones made up of shield-shaped scales. Need little pruning.

Cupressus sempervirens

Native to southern Europe, western Asia. Species has horizontal branches and dark green foliage, but its variants, all classic Mediterranean landscaping plants, are more widely sold. The most common grow to 60 ft. tall, 10 ft. wide, and sport blue-green, green, or golden foliage.
