DESCHAMPSIA

Grown for their graceful clumps of arching foliage and airy clouds of flowers. Although they grow over much of North America, most garden selections are imports from Europe. Use these in mass plantings.

Deschampsia cespitosa

Native to North America, Asia, Europe. Clumps of narrow dark green leaves grow to 1–2 ft. tall and 2 ft. wide; evergreen except in colder climates. Airy inflorescences in late spring or early summer can increase plant height to 4 ft. or taller; they are green to greenish gold, turning straw color in winter. Good subject for planting under native oaks.
