Native to Japan. Slender-branched shrub to 10–12 ft. tall and wide, grown for magnificent red-orange fall color. Nearly round, smooth, 2–4-in.-wide leaves turn from bluish green to shades of deep red with orange tints with the onset of colder weather. Tiny, purplish fall flowers are mildly scented. Provide rich soil and protection from wind.
