Mint-family member from South Africa. Branching to 4 to 6 ft. tall and wide. Hairy, square stems carry opposite pairs of narrow, toothed, 2- to 5-in.-long leaves. Blooms in summer and into autumn, with showy, dense whorls of tubular, deep orange, 2-in. flowers covered with furlike coat of fine hairs. Striking if kept well groomed. If frost hits, cut plant back to live growth in spring. Naturalized in Hawaii. There is also a white-flowered form, L. l. albiflora.
