California native. Spectacular plant to 6–8 ft. or taller, spreading indefinitely by rhizomes. Sends up thick stems clothed in irregularly lobed leaves; stems and foliage are grayish green. Along their upper part, stems bear huge (to 9-in.), lightly scented flowers often likened to giant-size fried eggs: each blossom has five or six crepe-papery petals centered with a cluster of golden stamens. Blooms from late spring into summer, even into fall with some watering. Flowers are handsome in arrangements.
